Isle of Rum Dark Sky Sanctuary Status (July)
Isle of Rum Dark Sky Sanctuary Status (July)
07/07/24, 11:00
We spent the week on the Isle of Rum shooting footage of wildlife, landscapes, and interviews with locals in anticipation of the Isle’s Dark Sky Sanctuary Status.
This certification means the area has some of the lowest levels of light pollution in the world. The Isle of Rum will be one of only sixteen Dark Sky Sanctuaries in the World, and the second in the UK. Bardsey Island in Wales secured its Dark Sky Sanctuary Status only last year.
As Luke Waterson, as featured on Springwatch and Lonely Planet, highlights the unique natural heritage of the Island, which hosts Otter, Manx Shearwater, and white-tailed sea eagle. Footage of wildlife and interviews with locals were interspersed with beautiful vista shots, enabled by drone cameras.
This was just one half of a long-term project; we’ll revisit Rum in October when the longer nights allow us to capture the Dark Skies themselves. Footage from July and October will then be edited into a single video about the Isle’s new status, which locals hope to be awarded later this year.
